Review of Tim's Vermeer (2013) by M W — 01 Jun 2014
Vermeer is in the title of this so I had to watch it. Tim's Vermeer is an interestingly entertaining documentary about Texan inventor Tim Jinison's fascination with the artwork of 17th Century Dutch master Johannes Vermeer.
Anybody who knows Vermeer's work is familiar with his unique look and vibrant, life-like color that can look more like a photograph than a painting composed of oils and hand-made dyes. 150 years before the invention of photography, Tim wonders how Vermeer's eye captured such exquisite details and he goes about inventing his own techniques of mastery trying to duplicate Vermeer's work.
Many were already certain Vermeer used a camera obscura in his work; but Tim takes this assumption further revealing the artist was most-likely a master inventor as well as a master painter. Comedians Penn & Teller direct and narrate this film in which little actually happens .
.. other than discovering Vermeer's secret and watching Tim replicate it; but I still found it to be an interesting watch as Vermeer is one of my two favorite old-world artists.
