Review of Time Bandits (1981) by Andy S — 15 Aug 2017
With a consistent flow of energy, lovely-looking set pieces and costumes, as well as a great cameo from Cleese, there are lots of good things to be said about 'Time Bandits'. Having said that, the film hasn't aged fantastically, particularly with the SFX that look extremely dated.
Certain elements of the plot make little sense, but it's the complete lack of connection with the characters that was the most damaging aspect; they're fun, in a silly way, but do nothing to warrant any genuine warmth of feeling towards them.
Overall, it does feel distinctly like a darker film aimed at kids, relying entirely on the wackiness and excitement of the adventure to carry it. Consequently, it's an entertaining ride, but one that is a bit shallow, messy and certainly not without its flaws.
