Review of Timber Falls (2007) by Poo B — 24 Dec 2011
Most low-budget, made-for-video horror films don't have the imagination to come up with a new concept or original plot. They pretty much use a variation of the same six or seven stories that are horror cinema's bread and butter, but that doesn't necessarily mean that they have to be bad.
"Timber Falls" is one such exception to that rule, with a tried and true plot but it still managers to be very entertaining. First and foremost, I really liked the two young leads, newcomers Brianna Brown and Josh Randall. They're both very down-to-earth and that makes their plight worth caring about, which is essential to us in turn caring about the picture. The villains are charismatic as well, especially Nick Searcy. Not only is he the only recognizable face in the movie, he's also great in being a guy you love to hate. You really want to see him and his family get what's coming to them, and when they finally do, it's gloriously gory.
I have never heard of these make-up artists before watching this, but I will sure be following up on what they do next. They do a bang-up job. Also credit director Tony Giglio for his part in this film's minor success story, as this is fast-paced and never boring. If you're a regular viewer of made-for-video flicks, you'll be amazed by how fast the time flies during this one.
Don't get me wrong, "Timber Falls" isn't on par with a lot of similar films, but it is a very welcome surprise. It's certainly pieced together from a lot of other movies, but that doesn't have to be a bad thing. This is quite entertaining.
