Review of Tim Timmerman: Hope of America (2017) by Spencer M — 07 Mar 2017
This film gives me hope for Utah based filmmakers. For as small of a budget that this film had, I was surprised with as good of a story and cinematography this film had. As far as the story is concerned, very impressed with the script.
Relatable, and investing. The problem here is the same problem I see in a lot of these films that Utah filmmakers are putting out. The gimmick of "Utah humor". Napoleon Dynamite didn't get its widespread attention and cult following from being exclusive in its humor.
It got it from taking risks and expressing natural and organic humor. This film suffered in some scenes where they were clearly trying too hard to get a laugh. My advice? If you want to make clean movies that are at the same time great, be yourself, be creative, most of all take risks.
Don't try to be gimmicky by including Utahan "lingo" and "humor". Overall, enjoyable film.
