Review of Tideland (2005) by Ben K — 18 May 2008
It was fascinating watching this right after Richard Kelly's Southland Tales. While that film was all derivative postmodern posturing, this film is the real deal: completely original, batshit crazy and disturbing, and heartbreaking in places.
Gilliam pulls you into the main protagonist's fantasies, but you're always grounded in the tragic, grisly, awful reality of her life simultaneously. Jodelle Ferland is absolutely remarkable in the main role.
