Review of Tideland (2005) by Mikael K — 31 Aug 2009
Terry Gilliam returns with a film true to his style, presenting extremely rough topics imbedded in fairytale-like storytelling and dreamlike visuals. After â??The Brothers Grimm,â?? itâ??s certainly nice to see that the director can still make something watchable. And â??Tidelandâ?? is certainly more than just watchable- itâ??s actually quite good.
Jodelle Ferland must be the best child actor Iâ??ve ever seen on film. Sheâ??s so good itâ??s almost unreal. How can a child reach a presence that exceeds the standard movie performance by light years? Here the imagination of a child creeps into the viewerâ??s mind as well, a rather unique experience, at least for me. The movie vividly reminded me of how it was like to be a child.
Even after considering a slight feel of aimlessness â??Tidelandâ?? has, itâ??s still safe to say that with a highly imaginative and quirkily symbolic film like this, Gilliam is back in the game for sure.
