I always admired “tick, tick…BOOM!” and its score, but was never sure how anyone could or would translate the late Jonathan Larson’s autobiographical musical to the screen (especially after the dubious debacle the movie version of his "Rent" turned into) but, despite his sometimes manic approach, first time director Lin-Manuel Miranda was the perfect choice to capture the urgency and emotional pull of the original without losing any of its integrity. Andrew Garfield was a thrill to watch, capturing Larson’s mannerisms without devolving into mimicry, but, more importantly, Larson’s unwavering passion, commitment, and, to a point, unvarnished selfishness. (Also, who knew Garfield could sing?) And Robin de Jesus, the emotional muse of the story, gave a beautifully nuanced performance as Larson’s best friend Michael. Garfield earned that Oscar nomination, and de Jesus was snubbed one.

Another treat was the myriad of Broadway alumni - legends, actors and composers - scattered throughout the movie - particularly in, but not exclusively to - the musical Moondance diner scene, “Sunday,” Larson’s - and in turn Manuel’s - tribute to Sondheim (who, BTW, has one of those aforementioned cameos in the film - albeit, only via voicemail).

It’s a gorgeous work, and I can’t wait to watch it again.
