Review of Thunderball (1965) by Stephen C — 01 May 2013
Of the Connery era Bonds this I find is the least interesting because it seems to marking time before we get to the fab You Only Live twice .
The main reason for the rather aimless plot is mainly due to the fact Albert R Brocolli and Harry Saltzman were no the main producers on this mission the scriprwriter Kevin McClory was .
McClory was unsatisfied withe finished project ,so much so 18 years later he gave it another go with the fair Never Say Never Again.
Connery is always reliable as Bond and Adolfo Celi is a worthy adversary .
The problem is here is a the pacing is a touch flat and the action feels undercooked compared to Goldfinger and You Only .
The girls dont get much to do except look glam and ONLY Luciana Paluzzi leaves a mark on the film as a ruthless killer.
Also this series has a very poor Felix Leiter a part that David Heidson played well in Live and Let Die looks a thousand miles away From Rick Van Nutters attempts at acting.
That said Q,M and Moneypenny get good value and the climax does make up for some of the films faults.
A fair Bond then but not a great one.
