Review of Thumbelina (1994) by Carol H — 02 Jul 2012
OMG, I used to LOVE this movie as a child. (I'm just a sucker for fairies and flight.) But when I rewatched "Thumbelina" as an adult... I saw how incredibly FLAWED it really was. This is a movie that's clearly made for children *only*.
The screenplay is too saccharine and mushy. The conflict isn't dramatic enough for you to care what happens to the characters. The villains aren't all that threatening. Every character is obsessed with seeing the main heroine married.
(What is this, the 1950s?) Worst of all, Thumbelina herself isn't that good a protagonist. She's always playing with her skirt, gives up *way* too easily, and doesn't go through any character development.
I swear, she is the prissiest, most childlike animated herione I've ever seen. (Even more so than Snow White and that's *really* saying something.) Hopefully in the future, Disney will decide to adapt "Thumbelina" themselves.
I know for a fact that they could do a MUCH BETTER job than Don Bluth and Co.
