Kurosawa provides an interesting if all too familiar retelling of Shakespeare's MacBeth. Toshirô Mifune is always a treat to watch as the insolent Washizu who, through arrogance and greed, foretells his own demise.
The film's opening and concluding scenes are almost identical, accentuating man's relentless quest for desire. So, Kurosawa has succeeded in creating a timeless piece as Shakespeare did even if it not his original creation.
The last half-hour is exceptional.
