Review of Throne of Blood (1957) by Marko H — 11 Feb 2008
Kurosawa succeeds where as far as I've seen no one in his time could acheiving timeless moments of horror.
The Japanese feudal landscape is a perfect fit for Shakespeare's material, but does Kurosawa isn't satisfied with simply translating the play into Macbeth with miso soup, Kurosoawa elevates, and reimagines Macbeth. He creates a claustrophobic mystical world in which the tragic hero is not in control, not free, but strung up by fate and black magic and forced to dance.
Kurosawa's Throne of Blood is epic horror as much as it is melodrama, and an absolute classic.
