Review of Three Thousand Years of Longing (2022) by Mauro_Lanari — 18 Jun 2023
(Mauro Lanari).
"The flaw of this film is that it does not express any desire to satisfy the audience." Feature lenght for festivals (6 minutes of applause at Cannes) rightly snubbed by spectators right from the test screenings. In the "mythos-logos debate" Miller already knows which side to take, having reinvented himself as creator/narrator of fantastic worlds. Yet, even if inspiring by "One Thousand and One Nights", the single stories on the past of the Genius / Djinn are not exciting, interesting, engaging, the praise of narratology does not become visionariness and the tales seem to be more read than depicted between the two protagonists in bathrobes sitting in a hotel room. The film itself feels rushed and a bit disjointed, and the philosophical and psychological concepts of loneliness, wish and what we would like are relevant but superficially explored.
