Review of Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017) by Doug B — 20 Feb 2018
What is there to say about Frances McDormand that hasn't been said? I don't think she's ever made a bad movie (and that includes Almost Famous, Burn After Reading etc.). Never really knew where it was going or how it was going to end. And Sam Rockwell really snuck on me; magically turned a simple, 2-dimensional character into a much deeper, more complex one. Well matched with McDormand.
Goldwynn or Mayer is reputed to have said "there are only two stories: a stranger comes to town...or a man goes on a journey". I'd add a third trope: redemption. In many respects that's what this one is about.
