Review of Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017) by Metaflix — 05 Dec 2017
‘Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri’ is the latest offering from writer-director Martin McDonagh, who once again delights with an original premise, tight writing, and interesting characters. Frances McDormand stands out for her hard-nosed turn and, as the lead, will understandably get most of the attention come awards season. However, in my opinion, the always fantastic Sam Rockwell has a more difficult character to portray, necessitating greater nuance and range.
The amount of effusive praise being heaped on the film would likely lead one to believe that this is McDonagh’s best film yet. However, I personally rank it third amongst McDonagh’s three features, behind 2008’s ‘In Bruges’ and 2012’s ‘Seven Psychopaths,’ largely due to a couple of poor casting decisions and unusual plot devices.
