Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri is a masterpiece of cinema by writer and director Martin McDonagh, and stars Frances McDormand in what is her finest performance as an actor. Sam Rockwell plays one of the most dynamic characters I have ever seen on film, and Woody Harrelson both delights and pulls at our heartstrings.
The rest of the cast is stupidly perfect, with amazing supporting performances from John Hawkes, Peter Dinklage, and Lucas Hedges among others. The script and story of Three Billboards is powerful, heartbreaking, and hilarious throughout the movie.
McDonagh really nails the cycle of anger and pointless violence in the world, and the film smartly sidesteps all cliches and pitfalls of a movie of this genre and caliber. I won't spoil anything about the plot, as it is best experienced "going in blind" as they say, but in a year of strong movies, I think we have a clear frontrunner for Best Actress, Best Original Screenplay, Best Director, and Best Picture.
