Review of Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017) by Graham R — 19 Jul 2018
I am writing this review immediately after finishing this movie. I signed up on RT simply because of this movie. Why? Because it's so bad and the critical reviews and critical acclaim for this movie are so good that I had to throw in my two cents. Where do I even begin with this?
I struggled to make it to the end of this movie because the script is so painfully awful. The vast majority of acting in this movie is so bad and I can't tell if it's the actors or the horrible script. Take the ex-Husband's girlfriend, for instance. Take Dinklage's lines in the restaurant. Take the lines of the office assistant at the advertising agency. The list goes on. People say the dumbest things in this movie.
It's all so over wrought. The script. The acting. the stars-aligning twists and turns. The improbable behavior of ab-so-lutely everyone in this film. it all has me asking how any critic anywhere can stomach this? it's like a preachy lifetime movie with much better production quality.
This movie is a movie that only a critic could rave about because critics are largely too afraid to knock anything with a positive message. They all seem to believe that if a movie has a strong political message--like that racism is bad or homophobia is bad--they cannot say a bad thing about it because it's the same as dumping on the message. that is nonsense. However, it's the only reason I can see that someone can praise this cliched, improbable train-wreck of a film. Having finished it, I am genuinely sorry that I didn't shut it off when dixon threw red out the window. And, not to spoil things, but it ends with characteristic anti-climax and you know that the critics dig that tripe too. I cannot, for the life of me, figure out how this got an academy nod for best picture.
