Review of Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017) by Cressie H — 26 Nov 2018
150 words to write about a film with so much substance is almost impossible but I will attempt to compress my ideas about Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri all the same. Straight away, the most intriguing thing about this film is the characters.
While the plot and visuals themselves seem exciting enough (huge explosions and beautiful cinematic filling the screen) McDonagh has clearly focused his time on developing his characters, and rightfully so.
By struggling to pinpoint a clear protagonist and having one's empathy stretched to characters one would least expect, the audience is forced to recognise that no everything is black and white, making for an engaging viewing.
With few words left to write I want to quickly focus on the importance of socially realistic films. While Three Billboards may not force its social message down the viewer's throat, it encourages conversation about topics that are not always the easiest to discuss.
And even though I may have some issues with elements of the film, the conversations that will stem from it trump any of those issues.
