Review of Threads (1985) by Sol H — 19 Nov 2008
I'm so glad I never had to live through the 80s.
The first 30 minutes of this film bored me. They weren't terrible by any means, but I was beginning to feel like this was going to be a let down.
Then the nuke went off and so did the film. From then on it's gripping (even though you don't care about the characters), horrifying and best of all, chillingly informative.
Maybe it's just my love of movies painting different scenarios of the apocalypse and distopian futures, but I really enjoyed this bleak vision of Britain trying to rebuild itself years after nukes had gone off, practically back to a medieval state of life, but there's just something wonderfully dark about this film. The ending was lame, but I really didn't care because in essence there isn't a plot. It's just a documentary-ish overview of England coping with the effects of nuclear bombs.
So yeah, a really good watch.
Personal enjoyment: 8/10.
Actual quality as a film: 8/10.
