Review of Thoroughly Modern Millie (1967) by Jacob K — 15 Jul 2007
An eccentric piece of history here. Hill?s musical shows one transitional era (late 60s) paying tribute to an earlier cultural growth spurt (the roaring 20s). Neither appears as innocent as intended by the director.
All of the blatant Orientalist racism, sexual oppression and capitalistic decadence have a way of spoiling the supposed purity of the protagonists. Yet after deconstructing before my eyes, I found this talky to be amusingly psychedelic.
