Review of Thoroughly Modern Millie (1967) by Smki 7 — 24 Jul 2006
[font=Comic Sans MS]Thoroughly Modern Millie is an incredibly charming movie experience which I do recommend. The movie is a spoof of the film conventions and culture of the 1920's yet there is a heart to this spoof that allows it to transcend that goal to being a unique movie in its own right. The performances of Julie Andrews, James Fox, Mary Tyler Moore, Beatrice Lillie, and Carol Channing were incredibly winsome and the chemistry was marvelous. There were only two faults I could really find with the movie, one of which perhaps is in part due to the company with whom it was viewed, was that it is an over-long film. It comes complete with an overture and an intermission which being faithful reproductions of the day are quite long and tiresome to contemporary audiences used to a snappy movie experience. The other more important criticism is that the ending rather confused/undermined the characterization of Millie as well as what the point of the movie seemed to be.
To be continued....
