Review of Thoroughbreds (2018) by Devaughn B — 09 Mar 2018
I enjoyed this film, but I didn't like it as much as I wanted to. The marketing from day one, which had been really selling this film as "Heathers meets American Psycho" most likely hyped it up a little too much in my head. This is a beautiful, dark, fun film, but it really doesn't come close to Heathers or American Psycho, despite the small similarities in tone. This is a beautiful film though; I found myself in awe of the cinematography rather than the story or characters, more often than not. But that's not to take anything away from the cast. Anya Taylor-Joy and Olivia Cooke are wonderful here, and their chemistry is amazing! Paul Sparks is becoming one of my favorite hardworking actors today. Seriously, this guy is always doing so much, his résumé is out of this world.
Once the credits began to roll, all it took was seeing "In loving memory of Anton Yelchin" to hit me hard. Still just so tragic to think about, how young he was when he died in 2016. This is the final film he shot, and finished shooting just 2 weeks before his passing. Always such a phenomenal actor, and his character is a wildcard here, bringing some much-needed attitude and spark to scenes. RIP Anton, I'm glad I was able to catch his final performance.
