Review of Thoroughbreds (2018) by Mike M — 18 Jun 2018
Thoroughbreds is a slow burn. Not a whole lot of action or gore from its out right premise but the movie instead focuses on taking its time to set up a mood and atmosphere with its dialogue, its camera work and its two main character's chemistry that keeps this movie from being a boring film.
The film takes great care in slowly revealing our character's many interesting quirks, feelings and motivations to really make you understand and build up the murder in its brilliantly subdued and hunting climax.
The acting by both of our leads is astonishingly amazing for their characters require a lot of nuance and character development that heavily relies on their subtle stares and mannerisms. Olivia Cook surprising makes her deadpan character extremely watchable and interesting also due to the amazing clever script, that offers some dark ass humor.
The first time director of this movie was able to blend the its similarities with "Heathers" and the expert level chills and feel of "The Shining" making this a filmmaker who truly has a talent for their craft.
The plot is surprisingly unpredictable, subverting your expectations at every turn and always keeps you interested to know what's really gonna happen next. If you like an incredibly intelligent albeit slow and methodical movie about two teens renued friendship and their plan for murder, then Thoroughbreds is the untraditional teen psychological thriller for you.
