Review of Thor (2011) by Cristian B — 18 Oct 2017
A thrilling, exciting, and visually dazzling entertainment. Director Branagh does an excellent job in bringing the mythology of the comic to life. He stages some incredible action sequences, but also manages to stay focused on the characters.
Branagh incorporates his Shakespearean chops into the family drama, which gives the movie an unexpected emotional range. He also assembles a talented cast. Hemsworth gives a breakout out performance as the handsome, but arrogant god of thunder.
He brings a charisma and vulnerability that is effective. Hiddleston is also impressive as Loki and brings an unpredictability to role that is striking to watch. There is also solid work from Hopkins, Portman, Dennings, and Skarsgard.
Branagh does a nice job of balancing the humor and the drama. The movie has a grand and epic scope, but is also intimate and heartfelt. The scenes of Asgard are gorgeous and the cinematography is breathtaking at times.
Thanks to Branagh's skillful direction and a talented cast, the movie kicks off the summer movie season in high fashion.
