Review of Thor (2011) by N M — 12 Sep 2013
Why did a film maker have to use an otherworldly being driving large portions the film's action (including the climax) from off-worlds to bring me the singular most human superhero movie I've seen all year? Thor may be the first classic fanboy-induced project from an era gone by that I find myself able to relate to all the characters in some way.
Maybe I'm biased, but I also enjoyed the avoidance of the humans as primitive and deeply flawed and in need of an alien to fix them shtick. And yes, the comedy...! I was rolling through several sequences of this movie.
Interestingly, like all of the big booming super hero flicks, Thor has it's share of near-cataclysmic dilemmas, but this one managed to keep the big ones outside Earth's atmosphere. Casting was pitch-perfect as a whole, but as a non-Thor lore guy, I can't help but wonder if 2 of character's ethnicities have continuity in the source material or are being used in the movie as "tokens.
" It's just a thought, and in either case, doesn't hurt my view of the exceptional work. Did I mention it's funny?
