Review of This Must Be the Place (2011) by Gianluca B — 26 Oct 2011
I really ought not to enjoy this: it is randomly whimsical and not everything is narrative relevant. It is a story of 2 halves: the character-full setup in Dublin is intriguing but irrelevant; while the more conventional US road-trip is narratively sound but less impressive.
ï¿ 1/2ï¿ 1/2The ending still baffles me (why see her?? and not her wife?) and Penn's character is just strange for no apparent reason. BUT - and this is a big BUT - it is visually cinematic well-composed and original; the soundtrack is brilliant; and the performances all round are impressive (it is always great to see character actors given something good to play with and each scene Penn shares with them are all rich, layered and amazing to watch).
So while it isnt a great film, it is interesting and original enough and it is always fascinating to see Penn do Robert Smith from the Cure.
