Review of This Must Be the Place (2011) by Zack B — 28 Jan 2013
It kept my attention because of how strange it was and of course because of the genius of Sean Penn. Unfortunately, the film was a jumbled mess of satire, preaching, and eccentricity. It seemed to me that there was a large conflict going on: the conflict of Paolo Sorrentino, as an Italian, wanting to comment on what he must see as an alien and bizarre country (America) with Sean Penn's transformative performance.
It seemed like Sorrentino was desperately trying to place our attention not on his main character, but on all sorts of stereotypical aspects of American culture, i.e. the obesity, the dependence upon technology, etc.
This, along with his erratic, showoffy style, obsessed with crane shots, is distracting and in direct conflict with the intricacies of Sean Penn's performance.
