Review of This Island Earth (1955) by Tim S — 01 Sep 2013
This Island Earth is not one of the best science fiction films from the era that it was made in, but you can't completely look at it from today's vantage point and judge it solely on the fact that it's dated in pretty much every way possible.
I'd like to think that the film's message, which seemed to be along the lines of being good to your fellow man and accepting him for who he is, is probably a little muddled in the mix. It is there though if you look hard enough.
It's actually a great looking movie that obviously had a bit of thought put into it, but it doesn't quite hold up. The cheesy effects definitely take something out of it while you're watching it and the message doesn't come across all that strongly.
It was chosen to be the film that was riffed in Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie, but regardless, there's some merit to it but not much.
