Review of This Is England (2007) by Christopher B — 23 Dec 2008
Bit of a contrast with Rocky for a same day watching. This is effectively a biopic about the troublesome, wayward English youths in the mid 80s. Yes, you pretty much understand it now and I could stop there.
Thatcher is in power, the Falkland Islands war has erupted, foreigners are stealing the jobs, rebellious youths attempt to retake England for what they believe it once stood for. Of course, this dream only leads to terrible corruption, racism, betrayal and... ultimately death. All of this is viewed from the eyes of an impressionable 12 year old boy. All of the acting is well done with both witty and unpleasant British humour; it delivers a heavy message on a declining society. Maybe a little short, some of the characters felt left behind as the film rushed on to greater things by the end.
Gritty and quite depressing when put into context of the Britain we live in today.
