Review of This Is England (2007) by Steffen N — 29 Jan 2009
WOWWOWWOW!!! I just happen to catch this amazing, heartbreaking, sometimes harrowing and ultimately redemptive film on the Sundance channel last night. Winner of the 2008 BAFTA for Best British film, this film has an amazing screenplay and masterful direction by Shane Meadows whose directing style is reminiscent of Ken Loach and Mike Leigh.
The film features a stunning performance by child actor, Thomas Turgoose and a harrowing yet very human performance from Stephen Graham as the volatile older skinhead Combo. This film also has a GREAT soundtrack which includes a beautiful cover of The Smith's "Please, Please, Please,Let me get what I want" by Clayhill.
The final shot of Shaun (Thomas Turgoose) looking out ot sea, and then at us the audience, is the most haunting closing shot of it's kind since Truffaut's THE 400 BLOWS. See this film!!!
