Review of This Is England (2007) by Jesse C — 17 Apr 2010
Movies about groups functioning within a subculture are usually harrowed with emotion being that must subcultures revolve around freaks and fuck ups and those outside the boundaries of society. This is England is no different.
Taking place in the grim side of Thatcher era England circa 80?s when Doc Martins and skin heads represented the nationalists, those behind the Faulklands war and those in support of St. George?s Cross.
We see this group getting on with their daily and those members involved in the stereotypical life of deceit and dire. A prior leader named Combo returns from the pen to reclaim his territory and although is a rough nationalist intellect internally is heartbroken and rancid because of his childhood.
His volatile personality, played brilliantly by Stephen Graham is a man capable of murder, true hate, and ne who embodies rage. The movie is told from the eyes of a child seeking a father figure after losing his own to the war and carries a great tradition of sympathy through film.
If you liked SLC Punk, Trainspotting, or Billy Elliot this is for you.
