Review of This Film Is Not Yet Rated (2006) by Jonathan A — 29 May 2009
Entertaining exposee about a documentarian and private eye who investigate the secrecy behind the MPAA and discuss the politics and double-standards behind America's movie classification system. While fascinating and attention-grabbing, I had two major problems with the film: First is that while the emphasis on the standards of violence was covered, I did not think it was done so as adequately as they did with sex, especially with the changing trends in the 60s and 70s.
Second, some of the research presented in the film felt incomplete, for example; films cited as receiving R ratings by the interviewees on first glance ("American Pie," "Basic Instinct") were actually initial victims of the NC-17 themselves.
Still, it's pretty interesting to watch as it uncovers one of the little mentioned last vestiges of censorship in the country.
