Review of Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo (1944) by Alan W — 22 Jan 2008
For a 1944 movie, it has all the elements that it takes to capture the reality of the moment...the preperation and emplementation of the first bombing of Japan after Peral Harbour are awesome. I agree with the fact that the footage of the actual carrier take offs and flights over Japan are very well intigrated.
The movie did win an Oscar for Best Special Effects! The accuracy of this movie, including the submarine mission into Tokyo Bay ("Destination Tokyo" 1944)for reconnaissance is good. I must admit I have a personal connection.
..my cousin is James Doolittle. As a child in the fifties, this movie captured me 100%. I agree that the 'love story' part of the movie was typically 'Hollywood', but knowing the 'truth' of each person.
..it can be overlooked this time around.
