Review of Thirteen (1988) by Mike T — 04 Jan 2011
Hard hitting drama about a young girls efforts to fit in with the coolest girl in school and the troubles it causes her and her family. Obviously this type of material has been approached before but its almost documentry style makes it seem very real.
As do the performances of Evan Rachel Wood as Stacey, the troubled girl trying to be cool and Holly Hunter as her mother and Nikki Reed, the coolest girl in school, who also co-wrote the film. The things Stacey and Evee(Reeds character) get up to are pretty extreme and might not be an easy watch for some but the film does show right away what the ellure of being cool and part of the "in crowd" means to young people and for that Thirteen deserves to be seen by everyone who's been there.
Maybe even those who haven't and know people who are about to.
