Review of Thirteen (1974) by Caleb M — 02 Mar 2011
Thirteen is gritty, hard hitting and unflinching. This oftentimes shocking portrait of growing up as a girl in California is also exhilarating at the same time. Wood and Reed are a fine pair, though Wood shows more restraint and control over her performance.
Reed co-wrote the script with director Hardwicke, which is quite a feat in and of itself. This is also a visually aggressive film, with high-grain, some neat visual effects that feel mostly in-camera, and effective editing and handheld camera work.
Thirteen may shock you, which is exactly one of the reasons it should been watched. It may lean heavy on the melodrama, but it works in connecting the audience to Wood and her surroundings.
