Review of Third Person (2014) by Chantal V — 04 Oct 2014
What an impressive surprise this was - especially after the horrible ratings. I saw the ratings before I watched it and I can't really tell you why. But I'm glad I did. Now, there's a reason for those bad ratings - many people, including the 'professional' critics, didn't get it.
Which is the only fault I can find with this film - if so many people didn't get it, it might not be as clear of a reveal that the producer/writer thought it was. Thought some reviewers still don't like the film even after understanding the 'twist', it's very clear in many reviews that most reviewers didn't get it and saw all the storylines (SPOILER ALERT!) as real ones.
I can confess something - I didn't get it either. I loved it because of its atmosphere, great acting and wonderful cinematography. But the explanation I had to find online and when I did, the film became even more beautiful, clever and gut-wrenching.
We're not watching three plots, we're watching (SPOILER ALERT) a two-hour soul-search of a man overcome with guilt. It's his guilt, his fears, his coming to grips, his lies, his honesty, that we see played out in the relationships of all the characters.
Beautifully done.
