Review of Things We Lost in the Fire (2007) by Josh B — 25 Jul 2009
I am a fan of Susan Bier. I loved her film After the Wedding (high Marks for it). I like this film also. She is a very fine accomplished film director. Her screen visions do some things most American films dont-they take a very intimate look at the characters in the plot-some very very closeup intimate filming and dialogue.
Very Bergmanesque. I was afraid (like After The Wedding) that again this would just be another melodrama--it is not. It is quite emotional and quite exceptional. A Widow whose husband has recently died become "chummy" with her husband's long time childhood friend who is a heroin addict.
She clings to him because she is afraid to be alone. It is interesting to see the interaction between the 3 children and the new man in their life--Del Toro. Berry and Del Toro are quite fantastic in their roles.
I am a sober alcoholic now for 14 years June 15 1995 though Alcoholics Anonymous. So the ending of the film (even though I am not a drug addict) was good to see. It is good information for people to know about 12 step recovery programs (NA Narcotics Anonymous) and factually seemed pretty correct to me.
Some drug addicts die (like Michael Jackson) Some Recover like (Jerry) Del Toro. I have a high esteem for the 2 Bier films I have now seen and have ordered the other 3. Highest Rating Five Stars.
