Review of Things We Lost in the Fire (2007) by Rash H — 05 Jun 2010
If The Dead Girl is crowned as one of the most indifferent receptions of its year, Things we lost in the fire is arguably one of the most aggressive. It slid in and out of theatres with little stir and yet managed to make MSN's worst movies of the year list, in the same bottom five as Norbit.
Personally, I don't know what they're talking about and judging from the writing, I doubt they actually watched the film. Starring Halle Berry, I can see why someone would intentionally try to hate it - family dramas and the obligatory "learning to adapt" plot is rather painful.
However, Benicio Del Toro doesn't make bad movies, or at least, he doesn't have bad performances. This is no different and he takes Berry by the hand into her best role since Monster's Ball.
I loved this movie because I enjoyed the melodrama, the familiar premise and the darker side that eclipses the last half. Possessive, angry characters and little children make an amazing blend.
