Review of Thief (1981) by Bryan G — 24 Jan 2009
One of Michael Mann's most overlooked films. James Caan is Frank, the title "thief" and catches the eye of a man named Leo (Robert Prosky) with whom he supplies his stolen goods. Leo wants Frank to work directly for him but Frank declines as he enjoys his self-employment.
Once he gives in, Frank discovers that Leo can become his best friend, providing him with an illegal child and other riches. But he also realizes that Leo essentially controls him. When Frank is not paid in full after a big score, he decides to get even in a violent showdown.
The movie is much more complex than my basic analysis but I don't want to give away too much. The soundtrack by Tangerine Dream and the direction of Michael Mann only add to the feel of this 80's caper.
