Review of Thief (1981) by Kapil B — 26 Dec 2011
A solid, cutting edge caper movie. Master crime director Michael Mann in one of his earliest films crafts a dark and throughly engaging heist movie. James Caan plays expert thief, Frank in a riveting performance who after one last heist he wants to retire and enjoy life with his girl.
But doing a job for the mafia wasn't supposed to be that easy. Caan's performance shows the anger, skill and violent nature of his criminal persona but also brings forth the soft hearted, loving nature of his family side.
The heist scenes are well done and the opening and ending scenes are very cool. The dark filming, atmosphere and music helps establish this film as a neo-noir and frankly one of the best heist movies I have seen.
