Review of They Shoot Horses, Don't They? (1969) by Charlie G — 03 Jun 2007
If not the best movie that I have seen in my life, it ranks pretty high up there. for two hours I was completely consumed with pity and anger while watching hundreds of poor people compete in a ruthless dance marathon in the 1930s in order to gain some much needed prize money.
the people, or victims, were exposed to constant cruelty as they were forced to dance for months on end nonstop, with only a few short breaks each day. these kind of marathons really did happen, and by viewing this film, I was able to see what the Depression was like by watching other's struggles.
If you really want to understand the extent of poverty during a dark time for America, see this movie.
