Review of They Shoot Horses, Don't They? (1969) by Stephen B — 30 Sep 2007
Painful. That's how I describe watching this... but in a good way. I empathize with the characters. I really get sucked into the film. Jane Fonda was powerful, this film was her own battle to prove she wasn't a talentless bimbo.
She more than proved herself. I think the film captured the story perfectly: the existentialist view that life is just one big pointless struggle in which no one wins and you're better off dead. You watch all the characters slowly decline physically and psychologically all for the entertainment of others and the hope for a better future.
A rerelease of this would give a good perspective of our current reality shows. And I guess the fact that I like watching this film shows that as humans we love to watch others suffer. Schadenfreude.
