Review of They Shoot Horses, Don't They? (1969) by Ricardo V — 20 May 2008
Bums/poor people in the depression joining a dance marathon for a chance at 1500 bucks. going on for weeks even! no lie, weeks!!! this all happened in real life, it's a sad sad story. people would watch to see these miserable people dance for money.
I love movies from this time period, it was riiight before the 70's which brought the greatest movies ever made, and this film is definitely an amazing movie to look at and analyze. it has jane fonda, who during this period of her career was about the most solid, real actress on the planet.
if you don't believe me, watch 'Klute'. the film's commentary about capitalizing on the poor and weak, the spectator sport of watching people nearly die of exhaustion shows a horrible side to people.
the colorful characters are well-written. you feel for the characters and hope they all succeed. then you have characters who you see fall further into desperation and lunacy. great film.
