Review of They Shoot Horses, Don't They? (1969) by Matthew Q — 29 Mar 2009
Brutal and brilliant! An emotional landscape as harrowing as the physical demands of the weeks-long dance marathon itself. Brilliant individual performances from the hard-boiled Jane Fonda to the cynical Gig Young to the brittle Susannah York. This film is even more admirable for the fact that it was set in a single location (the site of the marathon).
Just to get a sense of the importance of the prize money in such a marathon, unemployment in 1932, the year in which this was set, hit 33%.
