Review of They Live (1988) by Joseph H — 21 Oct 2010
Carpenter's sci-fi flick has acquired a cult following over the years as has most of his films. And while it isn't perfect by far, there is a goofy charm about legendary wrestler Rowdy Roddy Piper battling an Orwellian takeover of our planet by aliens using subliminal messages to control the human race.
There is plenty of action and the FX are good for what was a return to a more low budget style of filmmaking for Carpenter. Piper can't really act but, wins you over anyway and his line "I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass.
.. and I'm all out of bubblegum" is as legendary as his 10 minute long wrestling match/fight scen with Keith David. Not Carpenter's best bu,t it's fun when it's not being too preachy.
