Review of They Live (1988) by Irina T — 09 Dec 2011
The amazing thing about 1980 movies is such that the movies will remain stuck on your head for a very, very long time. "They Live" is definitely one of those movies that you can't easily remove from your brain. Its classic nature and relevant themes makes it just so fucking good.
The setting of the movie is similar to that of other 1980s movies, and highlights the corruption of society. It's utterly fascinating and abhorring to find out about this, and that you've been asleep for a long time as the government wants to keep it a secret from you.
This movie essentially discusses the abuse and injustice that comes with "democracy" and how we should be aware rather than being complacent with the government. It's indeed true that we all are actually facing this, because many countries are complacent with their economic growth. However, the government is never altruistic, and it is necessary for us all to be the watchmen of our governments.
Coupled with great acting, this movie really shows ignorant people that there is something out there that compels them to actually care about political affairs.
The only problem I have with the movie is the cliched ending because the traitor should have been someoen else other than the woman. (despite completely ending with a really humorous scene that should've been a bit more elaborated lol).
9/10.
