Review of They Live (1988) by Kenneth B — 16 Jan 2012
A line as unabashedly cool as "I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass...and I'm all out of bubblegum" would usually find itself in a film such as Carpenters own Escape From LA or Peter Jackson's Zombie pastiche Braindead.
Both are admittedly fun films but hardly ooze pathos. It is perhaps a surprise then to discover that They Live is a devilishly inventive little sci-fi film which recovers well after a middling opening half hour or so.
It has the aura of dystopia but also a cutting sense of humour. It adds up to a very entertaining film and certainly Carpenter's best post-The Thing.
