Review of They Came Together (2014) by Callum H — 03 Jul 2014
They Came Together ... as in going to the same party together. That is what the title means but I am sure it can be laughed at with other meanings as well as this comedy from director David Wain (Wet Hot American Summer, Role Models) is a spoofy send-up of successful rom-coms starring Amy Poehler (Baby Mama) and Paul Rudd (I Love You, Man) in which everything they say has at least a double meaning or two.
The film is of Poehler and Rudd recounting their relationship -- that starts off with a hilariously inspired horrible first meeting on the way to a costume party (uh, laugh out loud funny) -- over dinner with fellow friends Ellie Kemper (Bridesmaids) and Bill Hader ('SNL').
Rudd's ex is an underwear model (Cobie Smulders - The Avengers) he talks of often, and an accountant (Ed Helms - The Hangover) wants to date Poehler and these two have wickedly fun chemistry together as they each play off of one another's jokes like the master comedians they are.
The film is VERY literal -- wait until you meet the waiter with a flagpole up his ass! -- and many might get tired of all of the double entendre(s) but this is what helps make it so different than others.
It makes fun of itself from beginning to end. Christopher Meloni, Max Greenfield, Melanie Lynskey, Michaela Watkins, Michael Ian Black, Kenan Thompson and Michael Shannon (!!) all co-star.
