Review of They Came Together (2014) by Adrian V — 12 Sep 2014
(5 Stars) Seriously, please see this movie. At least rent it, I beg you. It's the funniest parody film I've seen in a while and it deserves your attention.
THIS is the return of the spoof movie. It's as funny as anything Mel Brooks and The Zucker brothers have done. If you want to see a hysterical and absolutely "nailed it" genre spoof, look no further than They Came Together.
I can't even remember how many times I laughed out loud during this film. It plays on every trope, every cliche, every "New York is like another character," everything you love and hate about romantic comedies... this is exactly what we've been missing in spoof comedies: bits that actually know what they're spoofing.
In a plot that closely resembles You've Got Mail, Paul Rudd is a lonesome corporate exec whose candy company is going to crush Amy Poehler's quirky little candy store. And oh, how it's quirky. The movie is a smart blueprint of every scene you see in every romcom since the 80's, but with comedic surprises. I can spoil hundreds for you, but you should just watch it yourself.
I loved it... every second of it. I've waited for this kind of comedy to come out since Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story. Nearly every joke works and I want to watch it again for all the jokes I missed. And I want to see more parodies of this caliber. Cut the pop culture-centric jokes and bring on the genre satire. They Came Together is the kind of comedy I only wish I could make.
