Review of There Will Be Blood (2007) by Mark P — 07 Jul 2014
As every reviewer has pointed out, Daniel Day-Lewis is a revelation as Plainview, and for such a character-focused movie as this one this makes a possibly dull film an electrifying spectacle. Yet the story structure and the intricate construction are also all perfectly crafted, giving Day-Lewis the necessary breathing room and stage to bring the story to life.
The excellent script, the subtle highlighting of the desperate and reckless times that allows a man like Plainview to flourish. Unlike Kane, Plainview is not a great man - he has no vision beyond isolation - but he is a great businessman, and the movie does an absolutely fantastic job of showing us the difference.
