Review of There Will Be Blood (2007) by Tehe T — 11 May 2014
It's official. Daniel Day Lewis is one of the best actors of all time. Every performance he brings is utter perfection and he tries his very best in every performance. His performance of Daniel Plainview is often said to be his best ever...though I disagree. I loved bill the butcher a lot better. Though it's neck and neck. This movie however is a lot better than gangs of New York. Though I loved gangs of New York, the story in this one was off the charts. It's tense, frightening, bloody, and everything I want in a movie. The movie also isn't bogged down by cliches and I can't really describe the tone of the movie. You'll just have to see it for yourself, which I definitely recommend.
The cast is fantastic in this movie, except for the I ratting boy. Though I could agree with him, because his father is clearly a psychopath...I'm just annoyed by some of the things he does until he grows up. Paul Dano surprises me with his acting as well. Giving a great and quite unintentionally hilarious character. Overall the grade for the acting is a solid B.
The story is about a Daniel Plainview who loves to buy up land for cheap and make a huge profit out of it. He's a very private man and hates when you mention anything about his son or anything personal. He comes into conflict with Paul's character and hates him from the beginning. This movie tells the story of how capitalism can have a darker side to it with a tycoon who's insane.
Overall, the movie exceeds expectations for me and by a large margin. Pi wasn't really expecting much and was watching it because people called it a masterpiece...that statement was spot on and is a near perfect movie. 9.6/10.
